What Is Dermaplaning and How Will It Benefit Your Skin?

If you have been hearing about dermaplaning and wondering whether it is worth trying, you are not alone. It is one of those treatments that sounds a little intimidating at first - but once you understand what it actually is, most people wonder why they waited so long to book it.

Here is everything you need to know: what dermaplaning is, why people love it, who it is best for, and what to expect during your appointment.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a gentle physical exfoliation treatment. During the service, a sterile surgical blade is used to carefully remove the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair - commonly known as peach fuzz - from the surface of your skin.

Despite the tool involved, the treatment is completely painless. Most people find it relaxing, and the results are immediately visible. Your skin looks brighter, feels noticeably softer, and your skincare and makeup products perform better because they are no longer sitting on top of dead skin buildup.

It is one of my favorite services to perform because the before and after speaks for itself.

5 Reasons to Book a Dermaplaning Treatment

Still on the fence? Here are five reasons people keep coming back for this treatment.

1. Instantly smoother skin Dead skin cells are responsible for that rough, uneven texture you might feel when you run your fingers across your face. Dermaplaning removes that layer entirely, leaving your skin feeling incredibly soft right after your appointment.

2. Makeup applies like a dream Peach fuzz and surface texture can cause foundation and concealer to look patchy or sit unevenly. After dermaplaning, makeup glides on smoothly and stays looking fresh longer.

3. Your skincare products absorb better When dead skin cells are in the way, even the best serums and moisturizers cannot fully penetrate the skin. After dermaplaning, your products actually do their job - which means you get more out of everything in your routine.

4. Peach fuzz is gone (and no, it does not grow back thicker) This is one of the most common questions I get. Peach fuzz does not grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning. Vellus hair does not have the same structure as terminal hair, so it grows back exactly the same as before - you just get to enjoy smooth skin in the meantime.

5. Zero downtime There is no peeling, no redness that lasts more than a few minutes, and no recovery period. You can go straight back to your day - makeup and all - immediately after your appointment.

Who Is Dermaplaning Best For?

Dermaplaning works well for most skin types. It is especially beneficial if you are dealing with any of the following:

  • Dull or lackluster skin that needs a refresh

  • Uneven skin texture or rough patches

  • Dry or flaky skin

  • Peach fuzz that affects the way makeup sits on your skin

  • Fine lines that are more visible due to surface buildup

  • Skin that feels like it has hit a plateau with your current routine

Dermaplaning is generally not recommended for active acne breakouts, very sensitive or reactive skin conditions like rosacea in flare, or sunburned skin. If you are unsure whether it is the right fit for you, feel free to reach out before booking - I am always happy to help you figure out the best treatment for your skin.

What to Expect During Your Dermaplaning Appointment

If you have never had dermaplaning before, here is a simple breakdown of what the experience looks like at Sandalwood Skin.

Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed before the treatment begins. From there, I use a sterile surgical blade held at a precise angle to gently exfoliate the surface of the skin using light, feathering strokes. The sensation is often described as a gentle scraping - it is not painful, and most people find it surprisingly relaxing.

As an add-on to a facial, dermaplaning takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It can also be paired with other treatments to enhance your results. After the service, your skin may look slightly pink for a short time - this fades quickly and is completely normal.

You will walk out with noticeably smoother, brighter skin - and you will likely be hooked from your first appointment.
